Summary/Abstract: The essay-study entitled Perspectives of Journalism Education in Hungary aims at answering six questions: (1) why do communication and media studies belong to both humanities and social sciences; (2) what is the professional field of practice like, or, in other words, what labour market does journalism education have; (3) what are the institutional guarantees of journalism education amidst a narrowing scope of higher education; (4) how can professional decisions be made under a constantly changing educational policy; (5) considering the steadily specializing scope of education, how can a common media ground be found, which could stop limitless expansion and curb professional imagination, (6) and whether communication education is needed, and if yes, in what form in primary and secondary schools. The answers to the questions touch upon the self-definition of our science, the current education practice of communication and media sciences, and a complex framework of interpretation, which can help communication and media sciences continue to realize their critical function regarding science and education as well as social processes.
