Summary/Abstract: Few issues dominated the debate in defense establishment in the past few years as much as ballistic missile defense (BMD). Much of the credit for the surge of interest in BMD belongs to the United States and its plan to deploy a national missile defense (NMD) system designed to protect U.S. territory or, in it latest reincarnation, that of the U.S. allies as well. Europe is a late and in many ways a reluctant arrival in the anti-missile defense industry. However, a number of factors . among them the tragic attacks on New York and Washington - have combined to change the threat perception in Europe and to make BMD systems more desirable. The essay analyses recent developments in the discussion on this issue among a number of European countries.
