Summary/Abstract: The defeat of, what is called, illiberal democracy, during 1998 election has been widely perceived as the turning point of Slovakia’s post-communist history. Emphasis is on the role of free and non-governmental organizations. The change happened only partially due to the activities of the democratic opposition politicians who took power after these seminal elections. The failure of the democratic government after 1998 to act decisively with the legacy of Vladimír Mečiar government has prolonged the current uncertainty and political instability despite evident improvements achieved by the current government in economics, foreign policy and restoration of the rule of law.
