Summary/Abstract: Baltic etymologies have a special place in the etymological studies by Julius Mägiste. His interest is manifested in two ways: on the one hand, he has published criticism on current etymologies, suggesting alternative solutions, on the other hand, he has proposed some new ones. Mägiste’s interest in Baltic loans in the Finnic languages is first revealed in his thorough-going analysis of a well-known study by Jalo Kalima, the scholar of the Baltic and Slavic languages (see J. M[ä]g[iste], J. Kalima, Itämerensuomalaisten kielten balttilaiset lainasanat. – Eesti Keel 1936/6, 182–186). In this review, Mägiste makes several methodological suggestions. He appreciates Kalima’s precision in his approach to the areal distribution of the loans, for “--- if in the future it should become possible to classify the older Baltic loans ---, the size of their area of occurrence should make one of the most important criteria of division ---.”
