Summary/Abstract: The author discusses the relationship between philosophy and cognitive science. She argues that there are two different viewpoints: the philosophy of science and cognitive philosophy (neurophilosophy). The first concerns the theoretical basis of cognitive science and philosophical theories of mind underlying approaches to cognitive science. She discusses functionalism, eliminativism and the reductive approach. Cognitive philosophy (neurophilosophy) is a genuine interdisciplinary approach covering overlapping areas of cognitive science (cognitive neuroscience) and the philosophy of mind. She presents the problem of determinism and free will and shows how research in both disciplines can contribute to better understanding and possibly solving it.
