Summary/Abstract: Abstract: “In the Shadow of the Big Brother” – Or the Main Changes of the Mongolian Theatre from The “Mystery Plays” to the Development of the “Political Theatre” As of the third decade of the 20th century mystery plays were banned in Mongolia, the first satellite state of the one-time Soviet Union as well as in Tibet that was under the sovereignty of China. The Soviet-Russian secular dramatics was the most characteristic element of the Mongolian theatre at the beginning of the 20th century. The Mongolian theatre influenced by the current politics did not prove to be so successful as the folk- and religious dramatics for centuries. Although the Mongolian theatre tried to integrate some elements and the practice of the Soviet dramaturgys, until the end of the 20th it could not establish a unified and specific system represented by really successful productions respectively actors bringing the house down. In the past 15 years new tendencies strengthening the national identity developed again. Today Mongolia is endeavouring to return to its roots independently of the “Big Brother” that is clearly indicated by the re-birth of the ancient tradition of performing arts as well as the development of the new tendencies.
