Tartu Film Events, or Siberian Pineapple Juice

Summary/Abstract: The text is a report on the 24th Festival of Anthropological Films, organized by the Nordic Anthropological Film Association (NAFA) and held on May 12-15, 2004. The films shown in the no-competition event were accompanied by an additional programme, including an interesting conversation between Gary Kildea and Peter Crawford, Johannes Sjöberg’s workshop on ethno fiction, the “round table” on Estonia’s documents on Siberia and the nation’s special predilection for research on Siberia. Besides films shot by such prominent anthropological film makers as Gary Kildea, the Festival special guest, Asen Balikci or Ivo Strecker, the programme also featured films made by students. Also presented were diploma works by graduates of Manchester’s Granada Centre for Visual Anthropology, London’s Goldsmith College, and Norway’s University of Tromso where courses cover both classes in visual anthropology and practical study of film directing. It should be noted that the Festival organisers managed to create a great atmosphere which was perfectly conducive to film watching and an exchange of views.
