Summary/Abstract: This article attempts to find the set of functions a political party does have in social and political system of present modem democracy. Number of catalogues of such functions exists but the following text tries to examine the topic from yet another perspective. While we are examining society and politics from the view of social system theory, we are identifying two sets of functions. First group of them are functions necessary for the system (system benefits directly of them and depends on them). The other set of functions are just a consequence of the very existence of analyzed subject - the political party as a specific part of social system (in this case system benefits just indirectly). In addition, several important concepts are introduced to the classical system theory model. These are scarcity of resources, bounded rationality, logic of collective action and the role set. The consequences which follow from such modification of the system theory model of politics and policy outcomes are the very aim of this study.
