Summary/Abstract: The main principles of stage design in the Lithuanian theatre in the middle of the 19th century were predetermined by the changes of the concepts of the relationship between the human being and the world. The changes of the ways of the creation of the theatrical image are characterized by four consequent and sometimes intermingling concepts of these relationships: “The Theatre is the World”, “The Theatre is School”, “The Theatre is Life” and “The Theatre is Temple”. The spectator, living inside of the model “The Theatre is the World”, was willing to experience the illusion of the world, created on stage and consisting not of real things but rather of their resemblances. The need of the cognition of the world demanded from the theatre information – thus the model of “The Theatre is School” was formed. When the surrounding world became knowable enough, the artists and the spectators were enjoying the possibilities of the model “The Theatre is Life”, recognizing themselves and their everyday life on stage. This model dominated in the middle of the 19th century not only in Lithuania, but also in other European countries. The discussion of this model had begun at the very end of the 19th century, when the new model – “The Theatre is Temple” – was declared, thus reflecting the main ideas of the approaching reform of the theatre.
