Summary/Abstract: Starting from the words of Christ: "“If anyone wants to come with Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me" (Mt 16.24), the article questions the value of spirituality of the Passion in Christianity from the beginning until the present day and analyzes the forms of this type of spirituality: Christian martyrs (teaching of Origen), Middle Ages (St. Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Francis of Assisi), the seventeenth century (spirituality of the recompense of Margaret M. Alacoque); eighteenth century (the spirituality of the cross as a participation in redemption - St. Paul of the Cross), our times (the crisis of asceticism and spirituality of the Passion and how to overcome it).
