Summary/Abstract: The nadı¯tu women of the Old Babylonian period have been the subject of many studies since the publication of the first documents dealing with them at the end of the 19th century. Since then the subject has been treated by many scholars in numerous articles and books. The documents concerning the Old Babylonian nadı¯tu caused great excitement among scholars, as it seemed very interesting that a large group of women coming from influential families formed a special class of priestesses who lived in separate city districts called the gagûm, often translated as cloister.
