Summary/Abstract: The hypotheses about the first arrival of Gypsies in Bulgaria are presented in the first part of the article. The accent is on the fact that in XIII-XIV there was not necessity for Romany people to cross Bulgarian lands in order to reach West Europe, because probably they used Via Egnatia and Venetian marine. In the second part a historical retrospection in demographic data since 1430 to preliminary results from the census in 2001 has been made. Places and size of migration have been shown. On the basis of Romany total growth between the last two censuses, districts in Bulgaria are classified and ranged by concentration, depopulation and stability of Romany population. In the last part the “expert’s estimates”, published in the last few years, has been criticized . According to them, the number of the Gypsies are estimated 2 – 4 times higher in comparison with the last two censuses. Their inadequacy is based on ignoring the decrease of adolescent fertility, increase of mortality including infant mortality, total growth of Romany speaking people 3,94%, two times higher share of Romany economic migration compared with the share of Romas in the whole population. Also they are incorrect when define children of mixed marriages as Gypsies and when they do not accept preferred identity.
