Summary/Abstract: The author outlines the history of language contacts between Croatian and Italian, focusing on the difference between cultural and intimate borrowing. The analyses are based on the corpus of Italian loanwords in standard Croatian and in Ragusan plays between the sixteenth and the turn of the twentieth centuries. Characteristics of adaptation of Italian loanwords on the phonological, morphological and semantic levels are presented, along with syntactical and sociolinguistic aspects of code-switching between Croatian and Italian.
