Summary/Abstract: From May 23 to June 31, 2003, at the Town Hall in Wrocław, there was an exhibition of sixty nine pictures by graphic artists from different countries. It was entitled “The Tribute to Picasso. From Miró to Lichtenstein”. The curator of the show was Wielend Schmied. Niki de Sait Phalle quoted Picasso in form of a joke. I consider her quotations in terms of “joyful song” or “circus buffoonery”. Giacomo Manzu referred to Picasso’s “War” and “Peace” series, and Jan Voss made references to his “Guernica”. Jim Dine’s “Big Red Wrench in a Landscae” referred to Picasso’s method of deformation and deconstruction. Shusaku Arakawa entitled his Picasso-like drawing “Kiss me quick, write me soon”. The exhibition documented the discourse between modern graphic art and the style of painting which has grown as thin as a lath.
