Summary/Abstract: His pictures are motionless, quiet. They are programmed as “nonavant-garde” work. They are different from both modern and old art. Vilhelm Hammershoei (1864-1916) is being re-discovered and critics consider him as important artist of the 19th and the 20th centuries. His career started in America when critics noticed unusual, “northern light” in his paintings. His retrospective exhibitions were organised at the Guggenheim Museum, Musee d’Orsay, and Hamburger Kunsthalle. The artist participated in many shows, including the World Exhibition in Paris, the Biennial in Venice, he exhibited in Germany, the Great Britain, and in America. The Uffizi Gallery commission from him a self-portrait. His work was admired by Siergiei Diagilev, Theodore Duret, Rainer Maria Rilke. He lived ands worked in Kopenhagen.
