Summary/Abstract: Leszek Małysa was born and grew up in Wrocław. In the 1970’s, Wrocław’s artistic environment was influenced by conceptualism and new-media-art. Artists were interested in new technologies and scientific discoveries. Małysa received the Master’s of Art diploma from the Art Academy in Wrocław in 1980. He was interested in drawing and photography. His early series of photographs was entitled “Breakfast on Grass”, and referred to the central part of Manet’s painting. In a series of photographs entitled “Drawing and I”, the artist showed himself carrying a nude model. In 1981, Małysa moved to West Berlin. He designed posters and book covers. His work included political, national, and religious symbols. He used such motifs as the human face and parts of advertisements. His pictures were grotesque, funny, tragic and heroic. He played with different artistic forms and combined different styles. In 1984, Małysa moved to New York. He formed his own style which was based the Surrealist ideas. His art became poetic and filled with the sense of humour. His commentaries to current events and situations often were connected with existential statements.
