Flavii in the Later Roman Empire: the New Citizens?

Summary/Abstract: In this paper the author critically discusses scholarly interpretations of the late antique and early medieval appellative Flavius. It accompanied the proper names of Roman emperors, aristocrats, civil and military offi cials, as well as those of the barbarian kings. The author excludes the possibility of interpreting the appellative Flavius as a symbol of a received Roman citizenship. Instead, he claims that it is the mark of belonging to the artifi cial family of ‘state’s servants’ in the Roman Empire.
