Summary/Abstract: Written travelogue is a genre that has received relatively less attention in Estonia than, for example, novel or short story. This article explains some terms and intro- duces imagology as a branch of comparative literature, which provides a good theoretical basis for travelogue analysis. Written travelogue is a borderline genre. On the one hand, it belongs to fiction; on the other hand, it belongs to popular (science) literature, thus combining the objective and the subjective. In addition to the Estonian term reisikirjeldus ’written travelogue, lit. travel description’, there are synonymous terms like reisikiri ’travel article, lit. travel letter’, reisiraamat ’travel book’, reisimärkmed ’travel notes’, reisimuljed ’travel impressions’, reisimõtted ’travel thoughts’ etc. The article discusses the differences between those terms, and the differences between reis ’journey, trip, tour’ and matk ’hike’, and also the differences between kiri ’letter’ and kirjeldus ’description’.
