Summary/Abstract: The contribution deals with the metaphors, which are used to handle the notion of time and which conceptualise a particular language community – in this case, the Czech and Russian languages. Source material was taken from the area of traditional lexicon, i.e. the area of proverbs and sayings; particular language resources were taken from F. L. Čelakovský’s Mudrosloví národu slovanského ve příslovích (first published in 1852). The central concepts are space metaphors – time is presented as a line on which it is possible to be in motion, object metaphors – time is an object moving into the past or into the future, and personification/ anthropomorphisation metaphors – time or some of its parts, have humanities. Other important metaphors recognised in the material, are Slavonic specifics of time perception: an opposition of sacred and profane time, the concept of time as cyclic, time in different orientations and also, time in tension or compression. This cognitive research should be helpful in the search for roots and basal concepts (e.g. time, space, number), either in a priori mind structures, or in the historical development of a given language community.
