Summary/Abstract: The article discusses some rare words used by Heinrich Göseken (1612–1681) in his handbook „Manuductio ad Linguam Oesthonicam, anführung Zur Öhstnishen sprache” (1660), which have been lost from popular usage and often from people’s memory as well. Those words are followed from dictionary to dictionary, spanning from the 17th to the 20th century and focusing, first and foremost, on the estonian- German Dictionary by F. J. Wiedemann (1869), the Thesaurus of estonian by andrus saareste (eKMs 1958–1963) and the manuscript of the estonian etymological Dictionary by Julius Mägiste (eeW 1982–1983). such analysis of lexicographic sources for 20 word entries (iiv, iivane ’yeast, yeasty’, imb ’downcast, apathetic’, iskuvikas ’long, very slender (animal)’, juhtutama ’strangle’, junkar ’icicle’, karts ’brave’, kugun ’slender’, kukne ’snake’, loore ’a species of ducks’, lõuk ’sound of an object’, mügam ’heap of spring grain or of hay’, rodu ’wayward child’, räsa ’crutch’, rüüge ’old skinny sow’, sori (sõri) ’blab, gossip’, suguma ’resemble’, toi ’nipple’, tunglik ’rough, bumpy’, uhine ’newcomer’, vaema (väema) ’to rape’ brings to light the consistency of literary Estonian.
