Scientists, poets and others - university librarians in German territories between 1789 and 1871

Summary/Abstract: The work characterizes librarians working in libraries of German universities between 1789 an 1871, in the crucial moment for the history of the modern university both in Germany and whole Europe. On the basis of available archive and printed sources a sociological characteristic of the circle of university librarians, especially education, profession/occupation was provided. Also, a characteristic of the course of library work, experience, professional career model, specialist publications written by them was given. The analysis conducted proved that a librarian — a collection guard gradually disappears in the 19th century while his place is replaced with a librarian — professional.
