Summary/Abstract: Theatrical moments in a ritual spectacle can be considered from several aspects. These include the historical viewpoint with certain references to the polygenetic ritual structure, as well as a comparative aesthetic-theoretical apparatus for a typological analysis. In folklore the theatrical and spectacular character of ritual does not always mean the presence of theatre in the modern sense of the idea. The scientific concept of the theatrical essence of the phenomenon presupposes, above all, a complex study of problems in their interdisciplinary trends. Considering the festive element as an aesthetic category in Bulgarian carnival folklore cycle, the author stresses its artistic relation to time. Cases in which the unity of folklore syncretism disintegrates and a break up of the active elements appears within the framework of the dialectical unity “spectator—performer” are subject of special attention. The active subjectivisation of collective “ego” turns conventional ritual play into a complete complex body in which theatrical components which build up the direct link of a somewhat different type of association, are differentiated. The use of certain terms of theatrical poetics in the article is conventional, as in the typological comparison of the concepts “theatrical moment” and “ritual spectacle” it is clear that two qualitatively different artistic systems of a different kind are in question here.
