Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the analysis of the little known vocabulary used in the lexicographical works of V. I. Dal. The author describes the lexicographer’s glossaries that have not been previously published. He insists that Dal has been the first scholar to pay attention to the social variants of the Russian language. Social dialects are characterised, special emphasis is placed on argot and patters. The article touches upon the combined nature of argot and other issues of interest like slangs and pidgin elements. The classification of social language variants in Dal’s works is given for the first time. The author polemizes with V. I. Dal in terms of the jargon of barge haulers and gives unquestionable facts.
