Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to discuss theoretical approaches to emigration and exile, especially from the perspective of Irish critics, and to present the manner in which they have been applied to (modern) Irish writing, such as Joyce‟s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, which is considered fundamental in this respect, or in Seamus Heaney‟s poetry. These theoreticians insist on the existence of a tradition of exile in Irish writing, some focusing on a tragic sense of Irish expatriation seen as exile and, therefore damaging for the individual, whereas others have insisted on the positive aspects of newness and non-conformity, inclusiveness and expansion experienced by Irish exiles seen as hybrids.
