Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the motif of alcohol in Sergei Dovlatov's works. Alcohol is the driving force behind the plot in most of the writer's works. Drinking alcohol by the characters in his writings has internal reasons - tradition, customs, as well as external ones - psychological. Drunkenness is a factor in ethnic identification of the Russians, which is a deeply rooted and eagerly cultivated tradition. Those who drink are decent, brave and trustworthy. Alcohol is also, for Dovlatov's characters, a way of achieving peace of mind and of alienating themselves from reality, in which the absurdity of existence is painfully felt.
