Summary/Abstract: A. Nyka-Niliunas poem "Elegy of Knowledge" ("Pažinimo elegija") is analyzed invoking the method of semiotic analysis. The essential attention in the analysis is focused on the poetic transformation of biblical myth about the forbidden tree of knowledge. The objective of knowledge and incapability to really cognize is the key inner conflict of the poem subject, which is being unfolded in the background of the choice between faithfulness to earth and breach of its faith. The earth is a transcendent adressant, however, only the infidelity to earth becomes condition to achieve knowledge, Conclusion of the analysis: the object of the subject value is knowledge, however, it chooses the programme of anti-adressant and infidelity, and this determines the sanction -- impossibility of knowledge and elegiac sorrow regarding unfulfilled entity.
