The Role of Lexico-grammatical Components in Building the Meaning of a Complex Sentence

Summary/Abstract: The article deals with a complex sentence in which the subordinate clause correlates with only one sentence member in the main clause. For example, a sentence Себе же он объяснял это тем, что в нем жила неистребимая любовь к памяти отца (V. Astafjev) is characterised by the obligatory correlative word тем without preposition in instrumental case in the main clause and a linking word such as the conjunction что in a subordinate clause. This type of constructions so far has been qualified differently, despite some scholars' (V. Beloshapkova's, L. Maksimov's) interest in them. The main focus of close linguistic examination of a complex sentence with "inclusive meaning" (V. Beloshapkova) is put on characterisation of lexico-grammatical correlation between components marking the construction under analysis, namely, basic words, an obligatory correlating word and character of a subordinate conjunctive means. The article puts and discusses questions concerning expediency/inexpediency of analysing the constructions under discussion as 1) a transformation of a simple sentence; 2) containing / not containing components fostering information development; 3) belonging/ not belonging either to polypropositional or polypredicative complex sentences. The results of the analysis of a complex sentence with inclusive meaning revealed that the construction under analysis can be characterised as a syncretic structure taking up a periphery position in a typological system of a complex sentence. The main factor determining the latter statement is lexico-grammatical characteristic of a basic word, namely its discursive meaning defining the place of complex sentences on the axis of explanatory <-» factitive-causative meaning.
