Summary/Abstract: Kazimierz Kłósak’s concept of knowing the human soul is based on Aristotelian and Thomistic philosophical traditions. In accordance with the principles of these traditions, this cognition of the soul is attained by cognisance of the intermediary which is reductionist reasoning. This claim, in turn, is justified by the notion that the human soul is favoured by a kind of ontological transcendence towards the physical world. However, this point of departure for knowledge about the soul is the empirical evidence provided by the natural sciences that deal with man and nature especially in terms of psychic and moral phenomena. Since these concepts are within accepted philosophical principles, they can be interpreted as an active expression of the substance of the human soul and its weaknesses. As a result, based on the above means of cognisance, a new approach is needed which will include the three traditions and the basic problems associated with the human soul; namely, its nature (oneness and essence, spirituality and immortality), and its descendancy and union with the body. Since these philosophical reflections are influenced at the point of departure by the limited scope of empirical findings and the character of reductionist interpolations, consequently the approach taken by Kłósak concerning his thesis on the subject of the human soul is regarded by him as a postulate of a mature faith. Furthermore, in view of recent scientific developments, it needs to be said that this thesis needs a new approach.
