Summary/Abstract: The author analyses the latest educational experiment carried out in the United States, namely creating charter schools. She is examining the neoliberal background of those schools, the debates concerning the takeover of the public schools by educational managers, whose primary aim is to generate profit, the corruption practices connected with the lack of adequate legislation regulating the transparency and accountability of those schools, the relations of the teachers’ unions towards the experiment and, first of all, the research data revealing the growing segregation of students in charter schools and data concerning the students’ achievements. She asks important questions: do charter schools realize their declared aims? Do they improve the students’ achievements in the country? Do they give the teachers a model of effective teaching? Are they really a mechanism of the school system reform?
