Summary/Abstract: The first part of this paper places the novel of William Morris in the context of utopian literature and determines it as a successful mixing of utopia and uchronia. The second part discusses the function of dreams and visions in Moriss utopian novels and analyzes the process of con­verting the dream of an individual into a possible collective vision. The third part of the paper places Morris novel s among heuristic utopia, in an attempt of reconciling opposing point of view of ones who see him as a scientific prediction and view of others who see it as subjective projec­tion of a frustrated intellectual.
