Quality of life of individuals with physical disabilities in relation to occupation and family status

Summary/Abstract: Summary In recent years, the quality of life concept is most popular in medical literature. The quality of life became an object of investigation for researchers in psychology, sociology, medicine and philosophy. In Lithuania, there is a lack of investigations concerning the quality of life of persons with disabilities. The present research was carried out in 2009 at the Landscape Care and Recreation Center (LPA) in Monciškės. The study cohort comprised 101 people with physical disabilities and was based on data collected using the generic WHO QOL-100 questionnaire. The aim of the study was to evaluate the quality of life of physically disabled people in their employment and marital status aspects. Inbox survey data were processed using SPSS 12.0 computer program. The arithmetic mean, standard deviation, reliability were estimated according to Student’s t criterion. The study data were considered statistically significant when they met the significance level of p ≤ 0.05. The results showed that physically disabled people described their quality of life as moderate. Employees with disabilities assessed all the sub-areas of their quality of life (general health, physical and psychological wellbeing, independence, social relationships, environment, spirituality and religion) better than did unemployed people with disabilities. Married physically disabled people rated their overall health and quality of life, physical and psychological wellbeing, independence, social relationships, environment, spirituality and religion areas better than did single ones.
