THE NEOLITHIC STONE TOOL FOR DECORATION OF POTTERY

Summary/Abstract: The artide presents a stone toot meant for the decoration of pottery, discovered. with the occasioll of field.-survey on the neolithical settleluent of Tărtăria (district of Alba). The fragmentary toot (2 cm tong) has a triangular section, with parallet shallow t1uting (channels) carved on one face. Typical for the Vinca-Turdaş culture pottery, the channelleu ornament appears at Tărtăria on SOllle sherds belonging to the Turdaş levet. Whitst no stratigraphical context, this tool nlust be related to the channelled. wares fronl Turdaş culture. Up to present, the polishing stones ~nd bone spatuta are the only neolithical toots known for the decoration of vessels. This unique piece from Tărtăria may contribute to elucidate some aspects concerning the prehistorical technologies of the pottery ornamentation.
