Summary/Abstract: In July 1820, coming from Aleppo via Urfa and Mardin, Alexander Csoma de Kőrös travelled to Bagdad with camel drivers and from Mossul downstream on board a primitive raft made of inflated goatskins, drifted with the current. In Bagdad he is kindly received by his fellow-countryman Anton Swoboda, a Slowak who is making business with India and Europe. The British Resident’s private secretary, Karl-Anton Bellino, a German pioneer of Assyriology and deciphering of cuneiform inscriptions, helped him materially to continue his travel to Persia.
