Who is Dr. Stoyan Chomakov?

Summary/Abstract: Ilia Todev proposes an analysis of the question "Who is Dr. Stoyan Chomakov?" He states that the firman for the creation of the Bulgarian Exarchate in 1870 is a result of the efforts of the Bulgarian people, who lead by the national elite, peacefully and self-depen-dently discards the alien clerical domination. In this struggle the Dr. Stoyan Chomakov has greatest merit. The author traces the main moments from his participation in the clerical-liberation struggles after 1860, his efforts to maneuver through all interested parties, in order to find the best possible solution for the Bulgarian nation. He also notes Cholakov's participation in the management of the Exarchate and in the struggle for the application of the Exarchate firman, his attitude towards the revolutionaries and the April Uprising, as well as his life and activity after the Liberation.
