Summary/Abstract: This study aims to reveal a series of theoretical guidelines regarding the restructuring of women.s identity in the emigrational process, focusing on how the particularities of work available for women migrants (assisting the elders, 24 hours a day, or housekeeping) contribute to this identity reconstruction process. The micro-institution of domicile as a main setting of activity for the women migrant has as equivalent the concept of .total institution. developed by Erving Goffman in .Asylums.. The empirical research took place during October 2006-February 2007, on the occasion of an Erasmus Scholarship, at the University of Studies in Turin, and it mainly consisted in interviewing 20 Romanian women migrants, using the biographical method. For a better comprehension of this material, we should underline the fact that the interviewed respondents have migrated all alone, unaccompanied, they didn.t speak Italian and had illegal status. These elements have a great impact on their emigrational experience and, inevitably, on their live stories.
