Summary/Abstract: Social exchange theory assumes that individual goals are achieved by self-interested actors through transacting with other social actors. Because social exchange regards interaction among people and the behavior they display in those circumstances, our paper is concerned with analyzing the role of emotions in social exchange, illustrating how these ideas bear on the context, process and outcomes of exchange. Therefore, we analyze the relevance of theories of emotions in social exchange, the relationship between emotions and social exchange considering emotions both dependent and independent variables, emotions and the work place (negotiation of intellectual exchange), the emotions produced by status (the negotiation of social exchange from the perspective of status theories), providing specific suggestions for developing links between theories of emotion and theories of social exchange.
