Summary/Abstract: The present article represents a small glimpse of the monographic part of the author’s PhD Thesis on the Italian anthropologist Ernesto de Martino. Its purpose is to present a concept which remained a constant in de Martino’s thought, contextualized and re-contextualized in his written and verbal discourse, no matter the political colour he undertook. Barbarization (imbarbarimento) of Europe is a concept forged by the fascist ideology in the context of the more and more perceived decadence of Europe and de Martino strove to theorize and elaborate solutions for an eschatology of European decadence, insisting upon helping the newly emerging working class to find its transition from its archaic type of mentality and traditions to a new, modern and free society, culture, belief and religion.
