Summary/Abstract: The present paper entitled “Eugen Lovinescu - promoter of the European modernism” aims to highlight our direct interest in the type of literature created in the first decades of the 20th century, namely what was considered to be integrated into the modernist approach. The first chapter of the current study-Values of modernism in the European cultural background – approaches the concepts of “modern – modernism” opposing those of “classic - traditional“, as they have been analysed by the interwar literary criticism. It is this conceptual binary relation which defines practically the project of European modernism. Tradition and modernism do not oppose each other; on the contrary, they represent a kind of mixture of complementary concepts. The second chapter called Dimensions of Lovinescu’s modernism will bring into play in fact, the entire critical and ideological debate which the Romanian literary critic expresses within the literary group of Sburătorul. One can easily notice that modernist approaches can be found in both Lovinescu’s criticism and in the prose and poetry’s evolution at the beginning of the 20th century, as well. Therefore, we have tried to shape a retrospective analysis of modernism as phenomenon promoted by those two literary movements. We will discuss, no doubt, the fact that those two cultural groups have constantly determined the evolution of the new interwar literature and criticism.
