Summary/Abstract: The Soviet Union is the biggest producer of timber in the world, being this one of the most important surplus items in her export trade. At the same time, this branch is facing great geoeconomic problems which are based on the fact that by far the largest part of the timber resources are situated in nearly deserted and undeveloped areas, whereas the industrial agglomerations of the Soviet Union are suffering from timber shortage. This fact led to decades of wasteful exploitation of the favourably situated forests along the rivers in European Russia. Because of the foreseeable damages of this measure there were dramatic disputes in the thirties between forestry scientists and the defenders of a ruthless industrialization. Today, the Soviet forestry is well organized and especiaIly, compared with the West, can rely on a large potential of experts, The efficiency of this branch, however, is limited as before because of insufficient technology and infrastructure and because of labour shortage.
