Does The Third Way Offer Slovakia a New Direction?

Summary/Abstract: After returning from a visit to Britain in December 2001, one of Slovakia’s most popular politicians and the leader of Smer, Róbert Fico, claimed he wanted to introduce Third Way/Neue Mitte thinking into Slovak politics. Fico may have been using the rhetoric of the Third Way to give his party’s programme some much needed ideological justification, but his stated desire raises a series of questions which will be explored in the following article: What is the Third Way? Is it anything more than a rhetorical devise? Can it be exported to Slovakia? Is the Third Way the best ideological framework for the Slovak Left/Centre-Left in the 21st century?
