Summary/Abstract: Europe is caught between the challenges of enlargement and globalization. Every fundamental debate leads to a single diagnosis: the Union needs greater cohesion and, in a large number, of key areas, greater integration. This paper attempts to analyze and discuss the challenges to the integrated Europe which relate to an eventual transition from a more industrial-based economy to an knowledge-based economy. The author claims in the near future economies will need a new type of work force - highly educated; knowledge technologies. In adapting the education system to these changes, the candidate countries have the chance to become leading countries in Europe, not the following ones.
