Summary/Abstract: Shortly after its publication in the UK, Innes. book was seen as a major contribution for its new insight into the split of Czechoslovakia. Its new approach was seen in its emphasis on the consequences of there having not been a referendum on the federation’s division. This emphasis predetermined the target readership into two groups: the Western readers and their counterparts in the Czech and Slovak Republics. To each of these, the book offers a different, yet equally invaluable, message. In the lands of the former Czechoslovakia, the lack of a referendum can hardly be seen as a surprise. Yet the readers will find a wealth of political, economic and social analyses of the realities leading to the decisions in 1992. Most Western readers will be surprised to read about the unconstitutional, yet internationally recognised, division of Czechoslovakia.
