Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the problem of death as a special kind of tragedy of human existence. It is comprised of three parts. In the first one, a fear of death and its relation with religiousness, together with multidimensional approaches towards death, are discussed. Five approaches to death are discussed (ambivalent, calm, religious, anxious, and avoiding). The second part of the article concerns dying. Stages of dying and the fundaments of helping the terminally ill are discussed. The last part concerns problems of mourning, by drawing special attention to its manifestations and forms of help and the importance of rituals.
