Summary/Abstract: The author argues that a work of literature is an anthropological situation with a history. The study of the history of literature is an essential part of literary studies. However the historical study of an author and his time is not the critical study of literature. The work of literature exists as an imaginative experience in the reader and not as an historical event in the past. The task of the critic is to explain neither the genesis of the work nor the formative influences, but rather to make it explicit, to reveal the symbolic language, open the structure, and interpret the themes: in brief, to make it part of the reader’s existential domain. The logical beginning for the inquiry is with the language. Literature is available to the reader only through a mastery of the inner circle of the symbolic system we call literary expression. The second step is the historically informed understanding of literary structure with its implicit development of themes. The third step is the interpretation of the work in terms of the reader’s reality. in criticism a novel is not a thing, it is an experience. The central justification for literature is that it is an open source for self-realization and fulfillment by the reader.
