Summary/Abstract: The expression „spectacles of thought” is used to designate the underlying principles of nature explanation. The darwinian revolution is presented here as a replacement of the spectacles of thought. The paper intends to show that this change has taken place as a result of various convergent influences: the voyage around the world on the Beagle which was the latent germ, a Malthusian view of nature which gave Darwin the decisive impulse, a close contact with the practice of artificial selection. The latter was an outstanding occasion for a previous articulation and testing of the new principles of explanation. Gradualism, the recognition of the preeminent role of chance as well as dissociation of evolution from progress were also orientations of thought which made possible the elaboration of a selectionist model of evolution.
