Linguistic features of “Visoky umny hitrosti Bertoldovi” translated by Christo Popvassilev

Summary/Abstract: The object of the study is the book that was printed in 1853 in Belgrade, Serbia, by Father Christo Popvassilev in “Slavonic-Bulgarian” language, as the translator defined it. The text is actually a translation from the Greek translation of “Le sottilissime astuzie di Bertoldo”, a book by Giulio Cesare Croce. Until now the edition of Popvasiliev has been an object of a single study in Bulgaria, which was focused on the literary characteristics of the text. The present paper studies the linguistic peculiarities of the “Hitrosti”, especially the mixing of “high” (traditional) with vernacular features.
