Summary/Abstract: The article analyses changes of population/ethnic relations in Gdańsk Pomerania since early Middle Ages until modern times. The analysis starts with an outline of the historical and geographical framework, as the territory of what is nowadays called Gdańsk Pomerania was undergoing constant changes related to political transformations. The region was subject to various political centres, many of which pursued their own settlement, migration policies etc., what resulted in changes of the region’s ethnic structure. The author focuses on these developments in the consequent periods of the rule of the Teutonic Order, affiliation of Pomerania to the Commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania, and in particular the partitions of Poland and the 20th century. The key phenomenon in question is existence and duration of the Kashubian community in this area. The final part discusses the consequences of the World War II for the population processes, including the post-war migrations, to conclude with the process of “subjectivisation” of ethnic communities in Pomerania after 1989.
