Summary/Abstract: András Jeles keeps challenging the autonomy of motion picture so as to emphasize that there exists an alternative to what the derailed history of film suggests being the solely possible type of filmicity. The Hungarian film director argues that the primary function of films is not to tell a story. On the contrary, the actual narrative of the film materializes “outside” the film. Through its very absence in the visible filmic flow of images, a non-visible quality appears. What does, then, Jeles´s film do with the story? Does he deconstruct it? Rewrite it? Does he deny it or turn it inside out? Does he simply retell it? It seems that none of these happens. Besides giving an analysis of “Joseph and his brothers”, the present essay looks for answers to these questions, which prove to be relevant in the whole oeuvre of András Jeles.
