Summary/Abstract: The self-presentations and self-constructions of post-socialist societies contain many recognisable mythical dimensions. The period and conditions of transition and emancipation from the previous system are among others characterised by new myths, "stories" and (self) images which these societies create for themselves. Though these post-socialist mythical constructions, of course, conflict with historical or contemporary evidence, this does not affect their persuasive power and (sense of) reality, and they can also be traced in the field of religion and the Church. The article discusses some selected dimensions of the relationship between religions and their churches and national mythologies as we encounter them in post-socialist societies: about the chosen people, the arguments that the dominant religion (church) is the right one for a certain people, condemnation of the former gloomy" period of history and visions of the future.
