The Encounter Of French And Montenegrin Culture In The Court Of Petar II Petrovićnjegoš And Prince Danilo

Summary/Abstract: At the beginning of the nineteenth century Western Europe was dominated by the Romantic Movement, which aroused interest in insufficiently known countries, their people, and their customs. In France, Montenegro was the most popular among them, being written about more than any other European country. At the same time in Europe, along with the prestigious French culture, the French language was the language of diplomacy used by the court and intellectual elite. During the reign of Petar II PetrovićNjegoš and Prince Danilo (1830 – 1860), Montenegro represented an alliance of clans and still did not have any attributes of a state, whereas the miniature royal capital of Cetinje consisted of a monastery, Njegoš’s residence, and several houses. Njegoš introduced to such an environment a French language teacher, Antide Jaume, who would also have the role of his ideological and political advisor, apart from being his language teacher. Njegoš would translate Lamartine’s verses and get inspiration from the French romantics for his great poetic achievements. The successor of the Prince-Bishop Rade, Prince Danilo and his ambitious and educated wife, Princess Darinka, were also Francophiles. The couple invited many French people to the court and introduced French customs and etiquette.
